Roald Dahl's The Witches is an upcoming fantasy comedy film directed by Robert Zemeckis, and written by Zemeckis, Guillermo del Toro and Kenya Barris. It is based on the 1983 novel of the same name by Roald Dahl, and is the second feature-length adaptation of the novel, following the 1990 film of the same name. The film stars Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, Jahzir Kadeem Bruno, Codie-Lei Eastick, Kristin Chenoweth and Chris Rock.
Hathaway portrays the sly, menacing Grand High Witch, while Spencer is the tough but tender grandma who will fight her to the end. The film also features Stanley Tucci as the hotel manager who unwittingly hosts the witches' convention, Kristin Chenoweth in an undisclosed role, and Jahzir Bruno as the heart of the story as the young boy (voiced by Chris Rock as an adult), who becomes the hero striving to stop the witches.
The Witches was originally scheduled for a theatrical release by Warner Bros. Pictures, but was later pulled from the release calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was later announced that it would be available to stream on HBO Max in the United States on October 22, 2020, with a theatrical release in select markets on October 28, 2020 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
